After much anticipation, Microsoft has finally announced the details of Vista Service Pack 1 Beta, which is designed to improve and enhance the operating system in three key areas: security, reliability, and performance. SP1 Beta will contain all previously released updates and a slew of new ones. Here are some of the most vital additions to the OS, which will be made available to a "moderate sized audience" in the next few weeks. Wider availability should come in the first quarter of next year.
Security
Security, perhaps the biggest area of concern for many Windows users, receives several enhancements, including strengthened BitLocker Drive Encryption, the running of RemoteApps, and a new API that will allow third-party security and malware-detection programs to work with the kernel patch protection on x64 versions of Vista.

Reliability
SP1 Beta addresses several issues that cause Vista to hang or outright crash. These include system compatibility with newer graphics cards, external displays, and printer drivers. SP1 should also provide a smoother experience for users who upgraded from XP to Vista and will address network configuration problems.

Performance
On the performance front, SP1 Beta looks to reduce the time needed to copy or extract files, become active after returning from Hibernate and Resume modes, and improve the log-in experience by eliminating the occasional ten-second delay between pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL and the password prompt. It also improves the speed of Internet Explorer 7, your notebook battery life by reducing system use, and the performance of domain-joined PCs.

Currently, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta is available by invite only.
